A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Records of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and also modern statistics corroborate Woulfe's statement that Ó Tuachair is the name of two quite distinct septs, one originating in the Ely O'Carroll territory (north Tipperary and south Offaly) and the other belonging to, though not originating in, north Connacht. (They came from Ulster and are mentioned in the Annals there as early as 1126).

In modern times the anglicized form of the name of the Connacht sept has usually been spelt Tougher and Togher, while the other tends to be Tooher, which is very numerous in Co. Offaly at the present time: Toher is common to both . In both areas this Gaelic name has sometimes been disguised by being changed first to Tooker and then to the English Tucker. There is, however, no real consistency in these differences of spelling; and when we look, for example, at the “census” of 1659-60 we find both Tougher and Toher listed as principal Irish names in King's County (Offaly). A century earlier when the anglicized forms of Gaelic surnames began to come into regular use, especially in oflicial records, many variant spellings occur such as O'Tuogher in Co. Tipperary and O'Twoghir in Offaly.

Family Names And Their Story (1913) by Sabine Baring-Gould

Tucker is a very characteristic west of England name. Its great home is in Devonshire, and it is especially numerous in the Barnstaple district. It is also found in numbers in Somerset, and occurs too, but much less frequently, in Cornwall, Dorset, Hants, and Wilts. Tucker was the west of England name for a fuller as recently as the 17th century, and in some places in the west fulling - mills are still called tuck - mills or tucking - mills. Tucking - mill, a village near Camborne, in Cornwall, thus derives its name.
