Of local origin from Tudhope, near Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, "Tuda's enclosure." Tuda or Tudda are common personal names in Searle. Alexander Tutope in Crocefuird, 1622, and William Tuttup in Nether Affleck, 1665 (Lanark CR.). James Towdop in Hawick was to be exhibited before the Privy Council in 1627 as a masterless person fit for the wars (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 85). John Tutop was murdered in Leith in 1641 (SCM., II, p. 235). George Tuthop is in record in Stanebyres in 1642, and William Tutop in Stanebyrewood was heir of Arthur Tutop in Leyth in 1647 (Inquis, 2738, 3227). John Tuittup in Auchmedden, parish of Lesmahagow is recorded in 1653 (Lanark CR.), James Tudhope was burgess of Jedburgh, 1703 (RRM., III, p. 131), and Thomas Tudhope, of a Peeblesshire family, was killed at Loos in the first Great War in 1915.
