Tumulty Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

I accept Wou1fe's Gaelic forms of this name viz. Ó Tomaltaigh and Mac Tomaltaigh, but it can hardly be described as rare and it certainly is inaccurate to locate it in south Leinster. An analysis of birth registrations for several years shows that it is seldom found outside the Oriel country i.e. south Down, north Louth and Co. Monaghan. It appears too in the Hearth Money Rolls of Co. Monaghan of 1665 (in 1663 it appeared as Tomoly) but it was not numerous enough to be listed as a principal Irish name in any barony in the “census” of 1659-60. Bernard Tumulty, the nineteenth century Drogheda Gaelic poet and scribe, wrote his name Brian Ó Tumultaidhe.

The name is on record also in Co. Roscommon and east Galway in the mediaeval and early modern period, where it has since strangely been corrupted to Timothy. This is probably a small sept distinct from the O'Tumultys of Oriel, deriving from Tomaltach, chief of Moylurg from 1169 to 1206. In the sixteenth century MacTumulty occurs much more frequently than O'Tumulty. In the Fiants, for example there are thirteen Macs and only three O's with this name (there are seven variations of spelling with MacTumulty) ten of those belonged to the Connacht sept and the other three to Leinster counties adjacent to Connacht. Two with the Mac prefix are in the “Composition Book of Connacht” (1585) and none with O.

Two prominent ecclesiastics of Elphin and Athlone (1284 and 1410) are mentioned in the Annals of Loch Cé; and a third appears in the state papers as Canon of Elphin in 1296. None of these has the prefix Mac. In the next century we find the O'Tumultys allied by marriage to the leading O'Kellys of Uí Maine; and Father P. K. Egan states that the name is still extant in the barony of Moycarn.

Mac Tomaltaigh, also Ó Tomaltaigh The Connacht sept of this name being now almost extinct, except in the barony of Moycarn, Co. Roscommon there remains that of Oriel, especially the part of it where Cos. Monaghan, Down and Louth meet. SIF 148
