User-submitted Reference
The name Tunnah can be linked to two possible origins. In pre-7th century English it can be familiarised with the word, tunne, which was a large barrel with a volume of 252 gallons. The name, Tunne, would have been used to identify anyone whose occupation it was to make these vessels.
A second possible etymology of the name is the french word, tondeur; this would have been a 'shear-man' of animals.
Some early examples of the name variants (which would include spellings like Tunna, Tonna, Tanna, Tunne and Tonne) include William Le Tunnere of Hampshire in 1280 and more interestingly a landowner called 'Tonne' who lost land in Lincolnshire during the Norman invasion of 1066 to Gilbert De Ghent and likely settled in the borders of Scotland under the permission of Malcolm III and the border regions is where we find the Tunnahs today.
