An Aberdeenshire surname first found in 1323 in the person of Adam Turin, who is mentioned in a deed regarding the park of Fyvin (Illus., I, p. 198). Two years later he served on inquest to determine the marches between Ardlogie and Fyvie (ibid., III, p. 549). The family was originally of Norman origin, and is said to have first settled in Angus in a barony of the same name, moving from there to Aberdeenshire about beginning of fourteenth century (Fermartyn, p. 565-572). Adam Turim was juror on inquest in 1325 (RAA., I, p. 311). William Toryn received the barony of Foveran in Aberdeenshire in the reign of David II by recognition from Henry Strabrok (RMS., I, App. II, 1247). William de Turyne was a charter witness, 1362 (REA., I, p. 105). Andrew de Turyne, dominus de Fowern, was one of the perambulators of the lands of Tarwas and Wldny, 1417 (RAA., II, 53). Thomas Toryne had safe conduct in 1424 (Bain, IV, 963); and John Turyn was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1440 (NSCA , I, p. 6). John Turing was bailie of Edinburgh, 1467 (Neubotle, 299). Thomas Turyn, merchant of Scotland, had safe conduct into England, 1473 (Bain, IV, 1407). William Turin, bailie to John, lord of Glamis, 1498 (CAB., p. 396). Robert Turing held land in Brechin, 1505 (REB., I, 222), William Turing of Fouerane is mentioned, 1550 (REA., I, p. 450), and Thomas Turing was tenant on lands of Newbattle Abbey, 1563 ( Neubotle, p. 327). The name is from Turin in the parish of Aberlemno, in Angus. Thurin, Thuring.
