The Itineraire de la Normandie shows ten places called Tourville, but from which of these at, or soon after, the Conquest, the family came, does not appear. Early under the Norman rule the name is conspicuous among the landholders of Warwick and Leicestershire. Ralph Turvile was a benefactor to the abbey of Leicester in 1297.
