Tweed Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'from the Tweed,' i.e. from the valley of the Tweed; v. Twaddle.
Adam Twede, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Local, from residence beside river Tweed. George Tweed in Milntoun of Fishery, 1741 (Aberdeen CR,). John Tweed (1816-1886) was a prominent publisher in Glasgow.
Tweed is known to be an old British word, of debated meaning. The family of Tweed, of Cheveley, Cambridgeshire, but identify closely with Welsh culture. In Welsh the word "Twyd" means family, kin, tribe or people; it's cognate with "Tud" in Cornwall and in much of Brittany. (Compare "Tudor" which is an anglicised form of Welsh "Twydr" meaning "leader of the people".)
Concerning the Tweed surname's distribution in England, it correlates most closely with manors recorded as belonging to Count Alan Rufus of Brittany during the Domesday Survey; those who left the Cheveley district settled in places in and around Duxford that Alan had also possessed. The concentration in Cambridgeshire is notable, as this was where he obtained his first extensive English landholdings.
According to family tradition, the previous generations of Cheveley Tweeds back to 1442 it's said were in Essex. Prior to that, some genealogists claim George Twedye, who died possibly in Boreham, Essex, migrated from the Tuedy manor of Drumelzier in Peeblesshire, Scotland.
The Suffolk Tweeds, across the border from the Cheveley Tweeds, were wealthy wool merchants. Tracing both families as far back as records allow, both are found in the same areas, but no shared ancestor appears, suggesting that the family was established in Cambridgeshire and East Anglia earlier still.Stolen from Fore-bears
In the early 1800s, the Scottish Tweeds dwelt predominantly in Ayrshire, a place of early 12th century Breton settlement (for example by the Stewarts who were formerly the Stewards of Dol in Brittany). It's noteworthy how few Tweeds reside in the Tweed Valley. The Tweeds, of Cheveley, Cambridgeshire, assert that the Tweed River was named after the family. There is also a Tweed River in Leicestershire; this had been called the Barwell (Boar Stream) by the Anglo-Saxons.
