John de Tweddale was tenant of the earl of Douglas in the barony of Kylbouho (Kilbucho), 1376 (RHM., I, p. xlvii; II, p. 16). John Twedale and William Twedale were archers of the East March of Scotland, 1404 (Bain, IV, 669), and Andrew of Twedale was a charter witness in Dundee, 1434 (HP., II, p. 175). Besse Tuodall in Lanark was heard in 1566 to "call the minister a cummoun theiff" (Mill, Plays, p. 262), David Tweddell in Pettinane, 1671, and several more of the name occur in the Lanark Commissariot Record. John Tueeddaill is recorded in Contland, Lanark, 1711 (Minutes, p. 114), and James Tweeddale was minister at Glenluce in 1791 (Wigtown). William Tweedale (born 1828), civil engineer and bridge-builder was born in Beith, Ayrshire. Tueddall 1684, Tweddaill 1696. Other old forms are Toudell, Tueddaill, Tuedell Tuodell, Twadal, Twaddall, Twidale and Twiddle, Twodell. The modern pronunciation is Tweed'al.
