This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the twinterman,' North English, one who tended twinters, i.e. two-year old beasts. Anglo-Saxon twy-winter. Mr. Lower says, 'The officer who commanded twenty armed men was called a vintenarius; and of this word I take Twentyman to be a translation' (Patronymica Britannica). There is no evidence in support of this. The corruption to Twentyman is imitative.
