This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Twysden.' Mr. Lower, quoting Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men, writes, 'This surname is derived from Twysden, or Twysenden-Brough, an estate in the parish of Goudhurst, Kent ... where Adam de Twysden resided in the reign of Edward I. His descendants sold it in the reign of Henry VI.' Mr. Lower adds that'at Sandhurst in the same county there is another Twysden, also said to have been a seat of the family, temp. Edward I' (Patronymica Britannica.)
