This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Twyford,' parishes in Buckinghamshire, Leicestershire, Norfolk, and Hampshire. Also chapelries in Wiltshire and Derbyshire. Probably the place-name arose from the fact that there was a double ford there. Hence the commonness of the place-name; compare Twycross. Of Tiverton, in Devonshire, Lewis writes, 'This place, formerly called Twyford, Twyfordton, or Twofordton, derives its name from its situation between two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman': Top. Dict.
