An extensive ward or district of Northumberland, which includes the Dale of the Tyne. The great Border family so called had their chief seat at Langley, near Haydon Bridge, and were styled in charters of temp. Henry II. Barons of Tyuedale and Langley Castle.
Same as Tindal, Tindall; from Tindale-ward, the largest of the six wards of co. Northumberland, traversed by the Tyne.
