Tynte Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The family are traditionally said to be an offshoot of the noble house of Arundell. In English Surn. I have quoted the legendary anecdote of the founder having distinguished himself at the battle of Ascalon under Richard Cceur de Lion, and of his having had his white surcoat dyed with Saracen blood-"tynctus cruore Saraceno," (Burke's Commoners, vol. iv.)-whence the surname Tynte. I think this etymology must have suggested itself to some one as a dernier ressort. I confess that it baffles my own skill.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Tradition gives the following derivation: In the year 1192, at the celebrated battle of Ascalon, a young knight of the noble house of Arundel, clad all in white, with his horse's housing of the same color, so gallantly distinguished himself on the field, that Richard Cœur de Lion remarked publicly after the victory, that the maiden knight had borne himself a lion, and done deeds equal to those of six croises (or crusaders). Whereupon he conferred upon him for arms, a lion on a field, between six crosslets, and for his motto,

"Tinctus crurore Saraceno.""Stained with Saracen blood."

Whence his descendants assumed the name of Tynte, and settled in Somersetshire, England.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

(English), Tinged, Stained; for the name of this family is said to be derived from their Latin motto, “Tinctus cruore Saraceno.”
