From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Formerly a not uncommon surname in Perthshire derived from the place of the name in the shire. Several persons of the name held important public offices in Perth at end of the fifteenth century (Methven, p. 3). The Tyries of Drumkilto, Perthshire, were ardent supporters of the royalist cause, and a family of Tyrie long owned the lands of Dunnideer in the Garioch and later were 'gryte Jacobites.' Maurice de Tiri or de Tyrunn witnessed a charter by William Maule of Panmure, c. 1292 (Panmure, II, p. 152,153), and as Morice de Tiry of Perthshire he rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 200). Thomas de Tyry was burgess of Arbroath, 1433 (RAA., JT, 67), John Tyre was rector of the parish church of Balingre, 1475 (Soltre, p. 72), and in 1485 Gilbert Tyrye was vicar of Cargill, Perthshire (REB., I, 212). William Tyre or Tyree was a monk of Neubotle, 1467 (Neubotle, p. 261,263). Schir John Tiri (Tyry, Tyrye, Tyre, or Tiry) appears as rector of Torrens, Lanarkshire, 1489-91 (OPS., I, p. 100), provost of the Collegiate Church of Meffane, clerk-depute of the dean of Glasgow, etc. (REG., 457,461; Milne, p. 13; RMP., p. 61). In 1489 he is referred to as 'Jok of Tyre.' John Tayrie, burgess of Perth, mortified some lands in Perth to the Church of Perth in 1511 (Nisbet, I, p. 118), and William Tyre rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the burgh of Perth, 1558 (ER., XIX, p. 46). Michael Tiry or Tyre and John Tyre aeree to deliver certain victuals, 1550, and William Tirie was burgess of Perth, 1551 (Rollok, 67, 77). John Tyrie, vicar of Cramond in first quarter of the sixteenth century appears in record as Tyri, Tiry, Tyry, and Tyrye (Rent. Dunk.). John Tyrie was servitor of Sir James Scrymgeour of Dudhope, 1609 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 144).
