According to Wotton's Baronetage, the family are traced to a Sir Hercules Tyrwhitt, who flourished in the reign of Henry I, They were raised to eminence by Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, Justice of the Common Pleas and the King's Bench, in the reign of Henry IV. Their chief abode was Kettleby, co. Lincoln. Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men.
