Of Flemish origin, and resident at Ghent, and afterwards at Flushing, in Holland, about the commencement of the XVII, cent. Daniel Tyssen, of the latter town, married Apollonia Ridley, a grand-niece of Nicholas Ridley, bishop of London, who suffered in the Marian persecution. By her he had a son, who settled in London, and was naturalized by Act of Parliament in 1689.
From the Danish, Thuessen, Thyssen; from the Dutch, Thijssen, Tijssen; from the Flemish, Tison, Tyssen; in the Domesday Book, Tison, Tisun; personal name See Tye. Gislebert Tison, a tenant in chief, in the Domesday Book, (Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire), had twenty-nine manors forfeited upon the ravaging of Yorkshire by William I. Teison or Thisun in Rotuli de Oblatis et Finibus, King John.
