From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. This curious looking name perplexed me for years, being well established in Yorkshire, yet without representatives in the Yorkshire Poll Tax, 1379. Several allusions in Brand's History of Newcastle, published in 1789, explain its history. In 1619 Sir Robert Mansell built some glass-works at Newcastle, bringing several skilled artisans, with their families, from France. Of these there were two brothers, married, called Teswicke.
