From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

UCHTRED: A common Old English personal name, in Old English meaning "sprite counsel. ' Borrowed by the Welsh as Uchtryd, the name occurs at least three times in the Mabinogion, Vhtred Eilaues sune witnessed King Eadgar's charter granting Swintun to the monks of St. Cuthbert, c. 1100 (Lawrie, p. 18). Vcteredus filius Fergus was one of the witnesses to a charter of a salt-pan (salina) in Carsach (i.e. Carse of Stirling) to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1140 (Kelso, 375). As Huctred filius Fergus, with the consent of Roland his heir, he granted to Holmcultram Abbey the vill called Kirkgunnin (now Kirkgunzeon in Kirkcudbrightshire) between 1161-74 (Holm-Cultram, p. 48). As Utred, lord of Galloway, he was barbarously murdered by his nephew Malcolm (Sc. ann., p. 257). Uchtred, son of Liulf, who held the mill of Scotley under the king of Scots, granted it to the Priory of Wetheral (Registrum Prioratus de Wethered), and as Uctredus filius Liolfi he made a grant of the church of Molle to the Abbey of Kelso between 1147-64 (Kelso, 176). He was the father of Eschina de Molle who married Walter, son of Alan, the first Stewart (Lawrie, p. 412). Vhtredus de Neuton witnessed a charter of three aeres of Karruderes by Walter del Bois, II. d. (Raine, 166), and Uhtred was vicecomes of Lynlythcu in the reign of Malcolm IV (Neubotle, 267). Hutredus capellanus de Boultoun attested the gift of Okelesfas to the canons of Holyrood in the reign of William the Lion (LSC., 213), and Huctred the baker (pistor) was burgess and alderman of Rogesburgh (Roxburgh) in 1329 (Dryburgh, p. 255; Kelso, p. 372). The name was wrongly considered to be Gaelic, and Mackenzie (History of the Camerans) understood it as meaning "eighth," and accordingly he rendered MacOchtery by Mac Ochdamh Triath, "son of the eighth chief".
