UDARD, Udwart: From Udard-us, an Old English personal name (Searle). Vdard, vicecomes, a. 1153 (Nat. MS S., 22), ancestor of the Swintons. Udard, sixth abbot of Cupar Abbey, died in 1207 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. xlix), Hudardus witnessed confirmation of the sale of the land of Scrogges to the church of Glasgow, c. 1208-13 (REG., p. 76). A knight of this name, a vassal of the Bruces, lords of Annandale, held the church of Hodelm (Hoddam) in 1202 (ibid., p. 83). Roger filius Vdardi, perhaps his son, witnessed a charter by William Bruce to Adam de Carlyle, c. 1194—1214 (Annandale, I, p. 2), and within the same dates Dunegal, son of Udard, resigned a carucate of land in Warmanbie or Weremundebi (ibid., p. 3; Bain, I, 606). Adam, son of Vdard witnessed an agreement between the monks of Neubotel and John de Morham concerning the water-courses of their mills at Morham, c. 1220 (Neubotel, p. 68). Udard, son of Uttu, witnessed a grant by R., son of Dunegal, to the Hospital of S. Peter (Bain, II. p 421). Reginald fil. Vdardi was a charter witness, c. 1240 (Kelso, 194), and Wdard dictus Selyman appears as witness in Dumbarton, 1271 (RMP., p. 192). Udward or Udwart was an old surname occurring frequently in the sixteenth century, but was later lost in Edwahd, which see. Andrew Uddard was burgess of Dumbarton, 1456 (Strathendrick, p. 192), and a later Andrew Uddart was burgess of Edinburgh, 1511 (Nisbet, Plates, p. 140). Nicholas Udward, dean of guild of Edinburgh, 1584, provost, 1592, and parliamentary representative of the city in 1585 (APS., III, p. 374) appears in 1594 as Nicoll Vduart or Vduard (ibid, IV, p. 85). Nathaniel Uddart in Edinburgh was the first manufacturer of soap in Scotland, 1619 (RPC., XII, p. 106), and Thomas Uddart was retoured heir of James Uddart in Greinoktoun, his father, 1646 (Retours, Ayr, 303). A genealogy of Sir John Lauder of Fountainhall mentions Margaret Uthward, "commonlie called Edward," daughter to Nicol Uthward, dean of guild of Edinburgh (Analecta Scotica, II, p. 11), and the old name of the family of Edward of Balruddery was Udward (Baronage of Mearns).
