From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
UDNY: From the barony of the same name in the parish of Udny, Aberdeenshire. The earliest record of the family appears to be in 1406, in which year Ranald de Vldeny, dominus ejusdem, granted to a chaplain serving in the chapel of the Holy Trinity, for the soul of Patrick de Vldeny, his father, "omnes terras meas cum pertinenciis vbi antiqua capella de Vldeny fuit situata et omnes terras meas iacentes inter duos torrentes scilicet de Brony et de Couly" (REA., I, p. 209). Alexander de Vldeny was a charter witness in 1450 (ibid., II, p. 296), and in 1457 the bounds of the lands of William de Vldny or Vldeny were perambulated (RAA., II, 109). Andrew Audny was a burgess of Brechin in 1585, and Alexander Udene was a member of council of Stirling in 1608 (REB., II; SBR., p. 285). The Udnys of that Ilk are said to have been the last family in Scotland who kept a fool as part of their establishment.
