ULFKIL: A common personal name in the south of Scotland in the twelfth century. It is a contracted form of Old English Ulfcytel (Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, 1004). Ulchel filius Alstan was one of the witnesses to the inquisition by Earl David, prince of Cumbria, on the extent of the lands of the church of Glasgow, c. 1124 (REG., 1), and Ulchil was one of three thralls gifted by David I to the Abbey of Dunfermline, c. 1126 (RD., 19). Ulkil filius Maldred was one of the witnesses to the same king's letter respecting the consecration of Robert, bishop of St. Andrews at York in 1128 (Haddon and Stubbs, Councils and ecclesiastical documents, v. 2, part I, p. 215). As Vlkil filius Meld' he witnessed Earl Gospatric's grant of Ederham (now Edrom) and Nesbit to the monks of St. Cuthbert, a. 1138 (Nat. MSS., I, 25), and again as Vlkillus filius Maldredi he was a witness to the grant by Earl Cospatric to the Abbey of Kelso, a. 1147 (Kelso, 288). Ulkil filius Morvyn attested King David's letter respecting the consecration of Robert, bishop of St. Andrews at York in 1128 (Haddon and Stubbs, loc. cit.), and as Ulfchil, son of Merewin, he was one of the perambulators of the bounds of the lands of Clerchetune granted by the same king to the church of S. Mary of Haddington, c. 1141 (RPSA., p. 181). Ulfchill filius Ethestan was one of the witnesses to a charter by David I to the Abbey of Melrose, 1143—44 (Melros, p. 4), and Hulfchillus, faber, attested the gift by William Masculus of the chapel of Foules to the canons of the church of St. Andrews in the latter half of the twelfth century (RPSA., p. 265).
