The same as Humphray, which see, with omission of the aspirate. Andreas Vmfray, cantor of the church of Dunkeld, 1374 (Scon, p. 145). Andrew Umfray (Umfrey, or Vmfrai), burgess and notary public in Perth, appears several times between 1444 and 1448 (RMS., II, 350; RAA., II, 120; Scon, 217). William Vmfra was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1459 (NSCM., I, p. 16). Sir William Vmfray was chaplain of Dornoch, 1527 (OPS., rr, p. 623), and Thomas Vmphray was burgess of Elgyne, 1590 (Trials, I, p. 204). The name is also found in Orkney and Shetland (Foula). Jeanna Umphray and Joneta Umphray were heirs of Andrew Umphray, sailor in Scallowaybankis, 1644 (Retours, Orkney and Shetland, 46, 47). Mr. John Umphra, minister at Walls, Zetland, 1671 (Edin, App.). Umfra is also used as equivalent to Ulfridus as a Christian name in the fifteenth century in an Aberdeen charter (CAB., 394—395). Aumfray 1481, Umphra 1630, Wmfray 1565, Wmphray 1610.
