James Vnthank was a witness in Edinburgh, c. 1426 (Egidii, p. 49), and John Vnthank was juror on an inquisition held in the same burgh two years later (RAA., II, 61). From places so named in cos. Cumberland and Northumberland; but perhaps originally from Unthank or Intack co. Elgin, which Carlisle translates "lonely," "solitary." There is however no such word in Gaelic. It may be from uaigneach, for uaignidheach, lonely, solitary, deserted; or from àite uaigneach, a solitary place; or perhaps from innteach, a way, road, gate.
