A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This surname appears to have been not uncommon in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Morice Unthanke of the county of Lanark took the oath of fealty in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 208). James Vnthank was a witness in Edinburgh, c. 1426 (Egidii, p. 49), and John Vnthank was juror on an inquisition held in the same burgh two years later (RAA., II, 61). Thomas Unthank, clerk and notary public in St. Andrews diocese, appears several times in record between 1462 and 1471 (Laing, 148; RMS., II, 771,783, etc.; Neubotle, 298-302). Katerina Unthank was spouse of Walter Beltmakare, burgess of Edinburgh, in 1477 (RMS., II, 1308). The later Unthanks may derive their name from the small estate of the name on the left bank of the Rule Water, but the first derived from Unthank in Lanarkshire. A worthy Scot of this name was a hotelkeeper in Paris during the Commune in 1871.

From places so named in cos. Cumberland and Northumberland; but perhaps originally from Unthank or Intack co. Elgin, which Carlisle translates "lonely," "solitary." There is however no such word in Gaelic. It may be from uaigneach, for uaignidheach, lonely, solitary, deserted; or from àite uaigneach, a solitary place; or perhaps from innteach, a way, road, gate.
