This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Urquhart.' There are places called Urquhart in the shires of Moray, Inverness, and Ross. The family are traced to Galleroch de Urchart, who lived temp. Alex. II. His descendants were hereditary sheriffs of Cromarty (Lower's Patronymica Britannica). The vernacular pronunciation is 'Orchar.' From the old barony of Urquhart on Loch Ness, Inverness-shire. From their position in the midst of clans the Urquharts, a territorial family, came themselves to be ranked as a clan. The early history of the family is obscure, but they are known to have held hereditarily the sheriffdom of Cromarty. William de Urchard was the first known sheriff. Adam Urquhart had a grant of the sheriffdom of Crombathie in 1358 from David II (RMS., I, App. II, 1254). Alexander of Hurcharde petitioned in 1381 for a canonry of Dunkeld notwithstanding that he held can-onries and prebends in Moray and Ross (Pap. Pet., I, p. 561). The name of Charles Urquhart (1669-1734), the Aberdeen Jesuit, appears in the records of his order as Urcart and Hurcar, and in his necrology as Urgart (Becker. Bibliographic de la Compagnie de Jésus, 1898, VII, p. 350). Sir Thomas Urquhart (1611-1660), translator of Rabelais (1653), and David Urquhart (1805-1877), diplomat and political writer, are the best known bearers of the name. Urcharde 1455, Urchart 1512.
