From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From Urr in Galloway. Hugh de Hur was one of an assize on the marches of the Grange of Kircwynni and the land of Culwen in Galloway in 1289 (Holm-Cultram, p. 88). Hugo of Hun appears as witness to a charter by the Kirkconnel family to Kirkgunzeon, and the name of Thomas, his son, is appended to another. Huwe de Urre or de Orre of Dumfriesshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a boar's head couped contoumé, S' Hvgonis d'Hvr (Bain, II, p. 183,203, 531). Hugh de Ur was one of the jurors on an inquest commanding inquiry as to the privileges claimed by Robert de Brus, earl of Carrick, 1304 (Bain, II, p. 412). Francis Wr was burgess of Edinburgh, 1557 (Laing, 676), and Alexander Ur was in Orkney, 1570 (RPC., II,. p. 737). Thomas Wr was declared heir of William Wr, mercator, "infra patrias de Courland et Cenngall," 1000 (Inquis., 47). Bessie Ur in the parish of Linton was tried for witchcraft, 1629 (RPC., 2. ser. III, p. 170).
