Of Norman origin this family has been in Ireland since the fourteenth century and has produced a number of distinguished men. Bibl; MIF 275; IF 302*
This family, of which the celebrated Archbishop of Armagh was a member, settled in Ireland temp. King John; and the patriarch of the race is said to have adopted the surname in consequence of his having held the office of usher to that monarch. B.L.G.

Ussher, one of the six clerks in Chancery, descended from a branch of the Norman family of De Neville, which assumed the name of Le Uschere or Le Huissier, from the office of Ostiarius granted to them by King John. Of this family was the gallant Admiral Sir Thomas Ussher.
Ussher or Uscher was the name of a family owning property in Morpeth parish in the 14th and 15th centuries (H).
