The Northumberland family of Delaval took their name from the Castle of La Val in the Lower Marne Valley (Mawer, p. 173). About 1190 Gilbert de la Val witnessed a charter by William de Hauekeristone of certain lands in the territory of Innerwick to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 250). About thirty years later the same or a succeeding Gilbert de Lauelle witnessed a charter by Robert de Schottun to the same abbey (ibid., 336). A third Gilbert de Laual, c. 1280 witnessed a confirmation charter by Walter de Bolbech "quoddam heremitorium quod vocatur Merchingleie" (ibid., 265). William de la vale was chancellor and chamberlain of Berwick-on-Tweed, 1364 (Bain, III, 105).
