Vallance Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From one of several places so named in Normandy. The family was prominent in Scotland at an early period. Macfarlane calls them Valouns, Wallouns, or Walloun, "now commonly called Vollum and long ago Valence" (II, p. 128-129). Roger, youngest son of Roger of England, came to Scotland and received the lands of Kilbride, which by his daughter and heiress was carried to the Cumins (Panmure, I, p. xviii). Philip de Valoniis, the fifth son of Roger of England, also came to Scotland in the time of Malcolm IV, and had from William the Lion a grant of the baronies of Panmure and Bervie (ibid., I, p. XIX). In 1174 he was one of the hostages for the observance by William the Lion of the Convention of Falaise (Lowrie, p. 174), and was witness to many charters of that king to the abbeys of Kelso, Neubotle, Arbroath, etc. He also held the high office of Camerarius Regis, and died in November, 1215. He was succeeded by his son, William de Wallonis, who witnessed a charter by Malcolm, earl of Fife, 1217 (PSAS., lx, p. 71), and died in 1219 leaving an heiress, Christina de Valoniis, who married Sir Peter de Maule and carried the baronies to the Maules. Symon Walense was rector of the church of Kynspinidi, 1269 (RPSA., p. 174), William de Valoynes of Fife rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 209), and John, son of Andrew de Valons, was one of the hostages for the ransom of David 11 in 1357 (APS., I, p. 519). Andrew Valance was bailie of Edinburgh, 1392 (Egidii, p. 28). James of Wallance, lord of Inchegalle, 1393 (Pilfirrane, 8), may be Jacobus de Valance who witnessed a charter in Fife, 1395 (Wemyss, II, 32), Robert Valance held land in Aberdeen, 1451 (REA II, p. 297), and John Valency was tenant of the bishop of Aberdeen, 1511 (ibid., j, p. 371). William Wallange was member of the Skinner's Craft in Edinburgh, 1533 (Colston, p. 81), James Vallance of Postle was overseer for the election of magistrates for Stranraer, 1689 (APS., IX, p. 51), and Luke Vallange was bailie of Biggar, 1718 (Minutes, p. 187). Valandis 1439, Valens 1681, Vallandge 1662, Vallange 1682, Valleng 1640, Walinch 1512, Wallanche and Wallenche 1567, Wallance and Wallenis 1686, Wallang 1569, Wallange 1605, Wallangis 1519, Wallence 1567.
(Anglo-French-Latin) belonging to Valence (several in France) = the Stronghold [Latin Valentia; from valens, valentis, strong]
From Valence, Normandy. William and Richard de V. and the fief of Valence, Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); Richard de Valencie 1198 (Ib.). William de Balance granted lands to Bordesley Abbey, Worcester, confirmed by Richard L 1189 (Mon. i. 804). Alande Valence was a Baron in Bucks 1165 (Rot. Pip.). This was a Norman family, different from that of Valence Earl of Pembroke; and appears in Battle Abbey Roll. Its insertion there has been supposed to determine the interpolated character of that document, but the name does not there bear any relation to the Valences Earls of Pembroke, who came to England in the thirteenth century.
