Werembold himself is recognized as a descendant from the Saxon warlord Widukind, who led his people against the conquests of Charlemagne. The name Gemen may originate from the Saxon word, gaman, which means 'gathering' or, more likely, is to be returned to the name of the Saxon tribe Chamavi, who inhabited that part of Hamaland, present Westphalia in Germany.
