This surname originates in the Netherlands, in a region near the sea and a river. The van Z/Swietens are an old generation of patricians near the city of Leiden. There are two explanations. There was a Dutch word, zwiet, meaning 'a group'. When a castle was built the lord of this castle had a group of soldiers under his leadership and this man was called the lord of Zwieten (group of soldiers) and thus the surname was born. Another explanation is that a river, a tributary of the river the Rijn, was called "The Zwiet" (maybe the name is from the English word sweet) and in the vicinity of this river/tributary. All people with this surname have their oldest roots.
