One principle of these cognomizations is in the second half of the 1300s with the Sienese painter Francesco di Vannuccio. The surname Vanni is typical of Tuscany, but is present throughout the center and in eastern Liguria. Vannino, almost unique, is probably due to transcription errors. Vannuccini, less common, is typical of the area between Siena and Arezzo.
