User-submitted Reference

(Hungarian) One who came from Vásárhely (market place), which is the name of a few locations. Hódmezővásárhely is a notable one in the Csongrád region.

Before Trianon (as Hungary lost WW1), Hungary owned much more (e.g., Kolozsvár = Cluj-Napoca, Temesvár = Timisoara, Pozsony = Bratislava, etc.). Some of these places formally owned might've had places named Vásárhely, in particular, Trhovište, which is now in Slovakia.

The etymology of vásár (market) is borrowed from Iranian, in which is of Proto-Indo-European origin. Hely is of unknown origin. The -i at the end of the surname indicates 'you are from there' in the language of Hungarian (e.g., 'Erdély' vs. 'Erdélyi', Transylvania vs. the Transylvanian).
