And this worde Vavasor he interpreteth to be this: Vas sortitum ad valetudinem, a man chosen for his valour and prowesse, placinge them above the dignitye of knighthood." Blazon of Gentrie, p. 102. Vavasores Regis, who occur in Domesday Book, "are much the same with Liberi homines Regis." Selden's Titles of Honour, p. 625. Of these Robert occurs in Cambridge, Lincoln, and Notts; William in York and the North. This family has always remained in Yorkshire. William V. occurs in York 1165 as a considerable landholder (Lib. Niger).
Vavasour: A vavasour is the vassal of a vassal, or the holder under a mesne-lord. But the baronial Vavasours were descended from Sir Mauger de Vavasour, porter to William the Conqueror. He is not to be found in Domesday, but his grandson was a landowner in Yorkshire.
