VEDAST: With Latin termination, Vedastus. A name adopted by ecclesiastics when they professed. The name comes from Vaast or Waast, in Latin Vedastus, the name of a bishop who died in 540. He was born near Limoges, and baptized Clovis the emperor. A life of him was written by Alcuin. Vedastus de Jeddeword held lands under the monks of Melrose in 1300 (Melros, p. 684), Vedastus Greresone is in record, 1466 (RMS., II, 907), Vedastus de Murhede was canon of Glasgow, 1476 (REG., 413), and Master Widast Lawsone was burgess of Aberdeen, 1634 (SCM., III, p. 118). Vedast Neilson is recorded in 1518. There is a church of S. Vedast in London.
