De Venuse occurs as a surname, 31. Edw. I.-Steph. de Venuse miles. This name, by the suppression of the territorial de, and the final e, would become identical with the designation of the goddess of beauty. The locality of Venuse is unknown.
As an English surname, doubtless the same as Veness, and the IT. S. names Winas and Winaus; perhaps from Venice. Under "Venus," Lower says, "De Venuse occurs as a surname, 31 Edw. I. —Step. de Venuse miles." Ferguson thinks Venus may be from the surname Venn and house, or ness, a promontory.
