Fenn Place in the parish of Worth, co. Sussex, had owners for several generations, called from it Atte Fenne, but in the time of Henry VI. the name was changed to Fenner, while a Kentish branch wrote themselves Fenour. Camden considers the name a corruption of Veneur, French, a huntsman.
William Venner was a Crediton gentleman in the time of Cromwell (P.); the name is still in the town.
The Fenners in past time seem to have been more numerous on the south side of the Thames. The owners of Fenn Place, Worth, Sussex, were called Atte Fenne for several generations before the time of Henry VI., when they took the name of Fenner; a Kentish branch took the name of Fenour (L.). For a short time, either in the reign of Elizabeth or in that of James I., Sir George Fenner owned Virles and Newick - house in Thurstable hundred (M.).
