This surname is derived from a geographical locality. I find no trace of this surname in the early rolls. Probably it is of later and foreign importation. Lower suggests La Ventrouse in the arrondissement of Montagne, Normandy, as the home of the family.

Current in Fife. Harrison says it is a weak form, "owing to the stress having Fallen back to the first syllable of the Norman (Orae) place name La Ventrouse," as was suggested by Lower. Weekley says Venters, Ventress, and Ventris are for 'venturous.' Bardsley finds no trace of this surname in the early rolls, and suggests it is of later and foreign importation. His earliest example is 1586.
