(Anglo-French-Celt.) belonging to Vernay or Verney (France) = the Alder- Grove [Low Latin vernet-um (-et-um, plantation suff.); from Gaulish vern-os (French ver(g)ne)-Welsh gwern-en = Breton guern-Irish and Gaelic fearn (Old Irish fern), alder-tree (fearn- ach, alder-grove] Item, un petit verney assis au terroir de Manopou.—Charter, A.D. 1412; Ducange, s.v. ‘verniacum’ [-i-acum was sometimes used for -etum] In our 13th-cent. rolls we find the forms (with prefixed de) Verney, Vernay, and Vernai. Vernay or Verney is naturally not an uncommon place-name in France; but no doubt the chief source of the Anglo-French surname is St. Paul-de- Vernay, Calvados, Normandy.

From Vernai, a parish in the arrondissement of Bayeux, latinized in charters, temp. Hen. I., as Vernacum.
Wigen de Verigny, or De Verincio, and Walter de V. Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); also in 1198 (Ib.).
Ranulph, and Roger de Vernai, and the Forest of Vernai, Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). Philippus Vernei 1195 (Ib.). Vernai was near Bayeux, Normandy. Gerelinus de V. c. 1080 granted lands to St. Peter Conches (Gall. Christ. xi. 132, Instr.); and Ralph de V. about the same time held, jointly with Ralph de Toeni, lands at Bois-Raillate (Ibid.). Walter de V. occurs in Cambridge 1158, Richard de V. in Stafford t. Richard I. Hence the Earls of Fermanagh, and Lords Willoughby de Broke.
