From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Originally de Vesci, from Vessey in Manche, Normandy. Eustace de Vesci founded the chapel of S. Leonards for the soul of Malcolm IV (Newcastle volume of Archaeological Institute, II, p. 116). Willelmus de Vesci witnessed the charter by Robert, bishop of St. Andrews, granting the church of Lohworuora to the bishop of Glasgow (REG., 11), and appears in other charters towards the end of King David's reign (Lawrie, p. 430). Eustace de Vesci granted to Walter Maner two oxgangs of land in Lium (Lyham), c. 1207 (Laing, 4), and was slain by an arrow when reconnoitering Bernard Castle in company with King Alexander II in 1216. Willelmus de Vescy witnessed a confirmation charter of the churcr of Buthelny to Aberbrothoc, 1221 (RAA., I, p. 93). Jhon Wessy was tenant in Castaris (= Carstairs), Lanarkshire, 1525 (Rental). Agnes Vessie in Westscheill, parish of Carnwath, 1629 (Lanark CR.). William Vessie, burgess of Lanark, 1636 (ibid.), and Marion Vessie in Edinburgh, 1647 (Edinb. Marr.).
