This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Vine-hall,' an estate in the parish of Watlington, Sussex, which was possessed by the family in the 14th century. The estate gave name to the Vynehalls, afterwards of Kingston, near Lewes, who, as Vinalls, in 1657, obtained a grant of arms (Sussex Arch. Coll. ix. 75, and v. Lower's Patronymica Britannica). The variant Vinal has ramified strongly in the United States of America.
