VOCAT: William Vocat, a Scots prisoner of war, was released from Colchester prison, 1396 (Bain, IV, 483). Alexander Voket and Johannes Voket appear in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 312,316), Rayny Voket was admitted burgess of the burgh in 1409 and Alexander Voket in 1436 (NSCM., I, p. 3, 4). John Vocat (Voket or Woket), burgess and bailie of Aberdeen, appears several times in record between 1435 and 1462 (CAB., p. 393; SCM., V, p. 22. 41; Illus., III, p. 272; CRA., p. 17). He may be the John Vooute, Aberdeen merchant, who had a safe conduct into England in 1438 (Bain, IV, 1114). William Voket, merchant of Aberdeen, had a safe conduct into England for two years in 1438 (ibid., 1118), and Andrew Voket, merchant of the same burgh, petitioned for restoration of his goods taken at sea by the English in the same year (ibid., 1115). William Wokete was one of an assize in Aberdeen, 1463 (CRA., p. 26), David Vocat was master of the Grammar School of Edinburgh, 1516 (Soltre, p. 264), and Walter Vocat was a notarv public in Botary, 1633 (Strathbogie, p. 6). The name is now extinct in Aberdeen. Vocate 1442.
