Volume Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An early corruption of Vallance, which see, through the forms Velham and Welham. John de Velham was on an assize at Brechin, 1364, and in the fourth year of the reign of Robert 11 John de Welhame resigned lands in the thanage of Alythe into the king's hands (RMS., I, 610). John de Velham was witness in Brechin, 1448 (REB., I, 117), George Wellem was owner of Woodwrae near Brechin, 1454, and in 1453 and 1509 we have mention of the land of Alexander Vellem in Forfar (RAA., II, 101,486). Alexander Wellem of Wodwray had a remission for treason committed by him, 1502 (Trials, I, p. 103). Alexander Wellam de Wodura (Woodwrae) appears as witness, 1519 (Panmure, II, 292), and in 1527 had a remission granted him (RSS., I, 3658). He may be the Alexander Wallein (Vallene or Vallance) of Woodwra who served on an assize in 1549 Trials, III, p. 347)."James Vallem and George Vallem sonis to Dauid Vallem of Woodwrae" wire hanged for stouthreif, etc., 1602 (Trials, II, p. 385). The family appears to have fallen into a state of indigence, for in 1630 and again in 1638 the Brechin Session Records show that "Alexr. Wellom, sometyme of Woodurae" received charity from that body. The list of "Rebels" for 1745 contains the names of limes Volume, surgeon, Peterhead. Thomas Volume at Bowence, Cruden, and of Thomas Volumn, servant. The surname is now better known in Buchan than it is in Angus (Jervise, I, p. 374). Vellem 1544, Vollom and Volume 1689, Volome 1680, Volum 1732, Wellom and Wolum 1636.
