The surname "Vukonich" is the "English version" of the name Vukonic. In its original Croatian pronunciation, Vukonic ends in a "ch" sound, and was often mispronounced among English speaking people. My great grandparents used to say that when part of the family moved from Croatia to the United States, they added an "h" to the end so English speakers wouldn't mispronounce it.
It's origination is still mostly unknown (at least within my immediate family) but my great-grandfather had a story about it. He claimed that the name started in the late middle ages when the head of the family angered a local lord, forcing the family to hide in the woods in fear of being executed. Supposedly, they hunted and ate wolves to survive during this time, and whenever the men would come home at night, someone would ask, "Vuk?", (wolf in Croatian) and because the hunts were usually unsuccessful, the hunters would usually reply "Nic", meaning nothing in Croatian.
