According to a story in my family the great-grandfather's wife and daughter were raped by the Turks during Ottoman rule in part of Croatia, and he went crazy and started killing them one by one in most brutal way so the Turks started talking of a werewolf killing their soldiers.

The surname Vukovic can be simply explained as this: vuk = 'wolf' and the the rest is just extension.

I am fairly sure that other people have their own explanation of their surname but this is the one that runs in my family. For his dedication in killing Turks my ancestor was awarded a great deal of land and a title that still exist on record.
