Váradi or Várady is a Hungarian surname that refers to the place of origin of a person called 'Várad'. That could be Nagyvárad (currently Oradea, western Romania), or Pécsvárad (Baranya County), or Szilvásvárad (Heves County), or Pétervárad (currently Petrovaradin, Vojvodina, Serbia) etc. The word ´Várad' is derived from the Hungarian word 'vár', denoting a castle, a fortress, which was probably borrowed from an Iranian language during the Hungarians' migration to the Carpathian basin (see the Avestan word 'vara' meaning 'shelter' and the Middle Persian word 'var' denoting a fortress).
