From Wedale, the old name of the parish of Stow in Midlothian. The earliest known bearer of the name is Adam de Wedale, "an outlaw of the King of Scots land," who appears in 1204 (Bain, I, 342). Stephen de Wee ale witnessed a charter of the lands of Swaynystoun to the Hospital of Soltre, c. 1221-24 (Soltre, 23), and Thomas de Wedal was canon of St. Andrews 1280 (Pap. Lett., I, p. 462). Laurence de Wedale of Roxburghshire rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears an eight-rayed figure and S' Lavrenci d' Vedal (Bain, II, p. 210,555). Symone de Wedale, abbot of Holyrood, Edinburgh, between 1296-1327 (Soltre, p. 42), as Symon de Wedehale was consecrated bishop of Galloway in 1327 (Dowden, p. 361). Adam de Wedale, monk of Newbotyl, was witness in proceedings against the Knights Templars in 1309 (Wilkins, Concilia, II, p. 382), and Roger de Wedale was canon of Dunblane, 1312 (Pap. Lett,, II, p. 102), and in 1321 prebendary of Murthlach (REA., I, p. 47). Provision was made for Thomas de Vedayle of the diocese of St. Andrews, 1344 (Pap. Pet., I, p. 80), William Waldale was juror on inquisition at Muskylburg, 1359 (RD., p. 267), and Thomas of Wedale was one of an inquest at Berwick-on-Tweed, 1370 (Bain, IV, 175). Sir Thomas of Wedalle, knight of Scotland, had a writ of passage at the Port of London, 1372 (ibid., IV, 194), Henricus de Wedale was a cleric of the diocese of St. Andrews, 1395 (RPSA., p. 5), and Robert Wedalle, esquire of Scotland, had permission to travel in England, 1405 (Bain, IV, 695). Henry of Wedale or Wedalle had a safe conduct into England, 1400-01 (ibid., 570,584), and Robert of Wedal the same in 1424 (ibid., 970). Robert of Wedale, notary public in Perth, 1421 (Athole, p. 706), Thomas Wadel of Blakchester witnessed a retour of special service, 1505 (Home, 29), and Thomas Vadle, merchant in Edinburgh, 1555 (Guildry, p. 120), may be the Thomas Vedell mentioned in 1557 (CMN., 74). Robert Veddell in Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 525), George Vodell in Kirriemuir, 1610 (Laing, 1583), Mungo Woddell admitted burgess of Glasgow, 1613 (Burgesses), George Woddell, burgess of Jedburgh, 1672 (Heirs, 94), Mr. Richard Waddle, parson of Glasgow, 1682 (RUG., III, p. 394), and William Waddale, residenter in Forres, 1793 (Moray). Alexander Weddell, pewtherer, was burgess of Edinburgh, 1725 (Guildry, p. 130). A family of Waddels were brewers at Liff for nearly two hundred years (Jervise, I, p. 192). Veddal 1515, Veddel 1604, Weddale 1453, Weddell 1525, Woddell 1598, Wooddell 1644, Wydall.
