The Wadlands were an ancient family of Bideford merchants of the 16th and 17th centuries. Mr. Thomas Wadland was six times mayor of.
Bideford in the reigns of James I. and Charles I. Richard Wadland commanded one of the Bideford ships engaged in the Newfoundland trade in the reign of William III. (Wat.). This branch of the family, according to Watkins, became extinct a century ago. The name, however, still survives in Barnstaple and other places around.
