A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

"Probably a Huntingdon name. The modern form might be Wesley" (LAC., p. 246). In Fife it hardened into Wakelin. William Wacelin (Wascelyn, or Wascelin) appears frequently as a charter witness in the last quarter of the twelfth and early years of the thirteenth ce ltury and about 1210 he had a charter of the land of Neutyl from Earl David (ibid., p. 14). As William Wacell he appears c. 1170 as witness in RPSA. (p. 41), and is often in Earl David's charters between 1198-1214 (LAC., 2, etc.). As Willelmus Vacel' he witnessed a charter by Earl David, brother of the king, of lands in Garuioch, c 1211-14 (RAA., I, p. 56). William Wacelin was one of the witnesses to Earl David's great charter of the foundation of the monastery of Lundors, 1198-99 (LAC., p. 5), as Willian. Waccele he witnessed a grant of the lands of Lessele to Bertolf, c. 1172-90 (Rothes, p. 493), and Walkelinus filius Stephani is a witness to the same charter. Walkelinus filius Stephani appears frequently as witness in charters by Earl David, son of William the Lion (LAC., index). Walkelyn, braciator regis (king's brewor), had a grant of Inverpeffer, c. 12J0 (RAA., I, 233). Ernest William Wakelen died at Wellbank. 1942.
