WALERAND: A Teutonic personal name found in DB. Old German, Walerand, 'battle shield' (Harrison). Waleranus, chaplain, witnessed David's great ch liter to Holyrood, c. 1128 (LSC., p. 6). He appears again as Gvalerenna, chaplain, a. 1158 (ibid., p. 7). Walran, abbot of Dere died 1234 and the Chronicle of Melrose (s. a.) records his death and burial at Melrose as Lord Walleran de Normanvil. Robert Walerand appears in 1255 (Bain, I, 1986), and Phelippe Walran of Edinburghshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears an eight-leaved rose, S' Philippi de Walran (Bain, II, p. 201,546.)
