(1) From the office of 'warden' (AF. wardein, a guardian). (2) More probably from Warden in Northumberland as the surname appears late with us. John Wardein was admitted burgess of Glasgow, 1627, as servitor to the marquis of Hamilton, and David Wardine was admitted burgess and guild brother, 1629 (Burgesses). John Warden in Camphill, 1685 (Dunkeld). John Wardan was retoured heir of David Warden, portioner of Auchinaitne, his father, 1698 (Retours, Lanark, 447). The name is now found mainly in Fife and formerly in Angus and Mearns.
